Taxes

Track tax return deadlines, extensions, and audit examinations across every entity and jurisdiction. Never miss a filing deadline again.

Never miss a tax deadline — and prove filing compliance for any entity, any jurisdiction, on any date.

Deadlines From Every Direction

Your CPA emails about the federal extension. A state notice lands in someone’s inbox. Property tax bills go to a regional office that may or may not forward them on time. Somewhere in a spreadsheet, someone tracks due dates for a dozen entities across multiple jurisdictions.

A missed deadline triggers penalties and interest. A pattern of missed deadlines invites scrutiny. When an acquirer or auditor asks for a complete filing history, reconstructing it from email threads and CPA workpapers costs time and credibility. Lextree gives you one structured record of every tax return, extension, and examination across all entities and jurisdictions. Not tax preparation software. A compliance record that proves returns were filed and when they were due.

Never Miss a Filing

Each tax return record captures its original due date, extended due date, and filing status. Alerts fire at 60, 30, 14, and 7 days before the deadline. Income tax, franchise tax, property tax — every return type appears in one view.

Extensions live on the return record. When your CPA files a Form 7004 or state extension, Lextree records the filing date, extended due date, and confirmation number. Amended returns maintain a clear chain to the original filing, preserving the complete history. Each record captures tax authority, jurisdiction, tax year, form number, filing method, and confirmation number. The filed copy and receipt attach directly. The full lifecycle — draft, preparation, filing, acceptance, rejection — appears in Timeline as an audit trail.

One Filing Calendar

Multi-entity tax compliance means coordinating obligations across federal, state, and local jurisdictions. When filing calendars live in separate spreadsheets maintained by different people, gaps are inevitable.

Still tracking deadlines in a spreadsheet? Start with our free tax compliance tracker template — it imports straight into Lextree.

Lextree maintains a single registry across your organization. Every return (federal income, state income, local income, franchise, property, withholding, payroll, excise) sits under the entity responsible for filing it. Filter by entity, jurisdiction, return type, tax year, or status. Consolidated returns sit under the parent with separate records for each subsidiary’s standalone obligations. Franchise tax can live here or in periodic filings under Legal Entities; property tax can live here or in Real Estate. You choose which team owns it.

Audits From Notice to Resolution

When an IRS or state audit notice arrives, the response clock starts. Missing a response deadline can carry consequences worse than the original finding.

Each examination record captures tax authority, jurisdiction, examination period, tax years, and scope. Response deadline reminders alert your team at 30, 14, and 7 days before each is due. When an audit involves multiple issues, you don’t rely on a single calendar entry to cover all of them. Individual findings get their own records — proposed adjustment, your position, agreed resolution. When the audit closes, the complete record (notice, correspondence, findings, closing letter) attaches as a permanent archive.

Tax in Context

Tax obligations don’t exist in isolation. An entity that loses good standing over a missed annual report can face complications with tax filings. Property tax deadlines follow the real estate your entities hold.

Lextree connects tax records to the same legal entities tracked across your compliance program — registrations, insurance policies, contracts, and licenses. When a registration lapses, a subsidiary forms, or you add a jurisdiction, the tax team sees it in the same system where filing obligations live. Every tax record links to its entity and connects to the compliance domains that depend on it.

Built secure

The record auditors trust. Protected the way they expect.

Lextree is built for the people who lose sleep over compliance, so security isn’t optional.

  • Encrypted in transit and at rest

Every byte that moves through Lextree travels over TLS 1.2 or higher, and the managed infrastructure it runs on encrypts stored data with AES-256.

  • Hosted in audited, SOC 2 facilities

Lextree runs on infrastructure certified to SOC 2 Type II, hosted in ISO 27001 data centers.

  • Role-based access, scoped to your data

Users see only what their role allows, and Lextree subscribers never see each other's data.

  • An automatic trail of every change

Every create, update, and delete is logged automatically — in the same database transaction — with the user who made it, a timestamp, and the fields that changed.

  • Daily backups, point-in-time recovery

Your data is backed up on managed infrastructure, with point-in-time recovery to roll back to a moment before a mistake.

  • Passwordless sign-in, SSO, and MFA

Sign in without passwords — Lextree never stores one to be stolen — with multi-factor authentication available and SAML or OIDC single sign-on on Enterprise plans.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Lextree a tax filing or tax compliance platform?
No. Lextree’s Taxes module tracks tax registrations, filing obligations, and filed returns as a compliance record. The actual preparation and filing of returns happens in your tax software (CCH, Thomson Reuters, Avalara, etc.); Lextree is the system of record above it.
What tax obligations does Lextree track?
Federal, state, and local income tax registrations; franchise taxes; sales and use tax registrations; payroll tax accounts; gross receipts taxes; international indirect taxes; and any other obligation that comes with an account number, filing schedule, or jurisdiction-specific requirement.
Can Lextree send filing reminders before deadlines?
Yes. Each tax obligation can have its own reminder schedule with advance notifications at intervals you set — typically 90, 60, and 30 days. Reminders arrive in-app and by email, plus an iCal feed for personal calendars.
Where do filed returns and tax certificates live?
Each return, certificate of authority, sales tax registration, or notice of assessment is attached to the relevant tax obligation record. The full filing history is one click away from the entity, organized by year and tax type.
Can we track tax registrations alongside the legal entity that holds them?
Yes. Tax registrations are tied to the entity in the Legal Entities module, so an entity’s full tax footprint surfaces on a single record. State withdrawals and dissolutions automatically flag the tax registrations that need to be closed.
Does Lextree handle nexus analysis or apportionment?
No. Apportionment and nexus determinations are made in your tax engine. Lextree holds the resulting registrations and the documentation that supports them, so you can prove what you registered for and when.
